In this new normal that we all live in, air quality in our homes has taken on more importance. There are a lot of different air purifying systems on the market and making a decision on what is best for our family can be challenging. Are UV lamps the best option or are ionic systems the better choice? The truth is both of these options are great for improving the air quality in our homes, especially when combined with HEPA filters, so lets take a look at each one.

UV Lamps

There are two installation options. One for the coil and drain pan, and the another for the duct system. What are the pros and cons of using UV lamps?

PROS:

  • Kills germs
  • Prevents mold and bacteria growth
  • Prevents particle buildup
  • Silent operation

CONS:

  • Can be very expensive depending on installation requirements
  • Can cause damage to plastics and flex ducts
  • Requires yearly maintenance and extra costs
  • Minimal effect on viruses

Ionic Air Purifiers

These systems, like UV lamps, have been around for decades. Some can be moved from room to room, while others are installed into the HVAC system to treat the air coming from the air handler before it enters our home. The technology varies so lets look at the general pros and cons.

PROS:

  • Energy efficient
  • Most require little to no maintenance…”set and forget”
  • Excellent for smoke, odors and harmful pathogens
  • Some can reduce the effects of seasonal and pet allergies

CONS:

  • Many are ineffective in treating mold spores
  • Some produce toxic ozone…avoid these at all costs!
  • Can make the area around it extra dusty
  • Most have a small area of effective coverage

Our Recommendation

The above mentioned systems each serve a different purpose and the one that is right for you depends on multiple factors, like climate for example. FACT HVAC’s recommendation is actually a “third” option though it is an ionic device.

Important note: FACT HVAC is not sponsored by nor has any affiliation with this company. Our pick is based solely on testing and research.

That being said, we like the iWave-R made by Nu-Calgon. It is designed specifically for use in residential HVAC systems, it’s technologically advanced, does not emit ozone, and it won’t break the bank. Plus, and this is a BIG PLUS, it is one of a few residential systems that has been independently tested and verified to kill the COVID-19 virus.

How does it work:

iWave uses patented technology, called needle-point bi-polar ionization, to create equal amounts of positive and negative ions. When these ions are injected into the air stream, they break down passing pollutants and gases into harmless compounds like oxygen, carbon dioxide, nitrogen and water vapor.

When the ions come in contact with viruses, bacteria or mold, they remove the hydrogen molecules – without them, the pathogens have no source of energy and will die. The ions also attach to allergens like pollen and other particles, causing them to band together until they are large enough to be caught by your ventilation system’s air filter.

While there is no system available that will turn your home into a sterilized operating room, the iWave-R is one the best home air purifiers on the market.
